For years I have avoided Nick Cage movies deeming him an overrated actor without the ability to pick films worth my time. So I rolled my eyes through Ghost Rider previews, laughed at people who got excited about National Treasure, and expressed outright disapproval for moves like The Family Man and Next.
What can I say... the man just bugs me! He's not believable! AND I find his voice kind of irritating.
I can hear you The Rock-junkies and Face Off-ers protesting. Your faces all red with fury. Your eyes about to pop right out! "Have you SEEN CON AIR?!" you say to me. And to that I say: "Yes. I have." and "Eh!"
But before you jump through my screen and unleash upon me the Lord of War, you should know, that this is not a post about my disliking Nicolas Cage. Sure I USED to dislike him and avoid him to the best of my abilities... but in the last few weeks two events uprooted and turned my view of Nick Cage inside out. These were:
1. Raising Arizona
2. Adaptation
I KNOW that these movies have been around for ages and that had I not been so stubborn in my dislike of Mr. Cage, I would have discovered long ago that he is actually a quite alright actor and pretty darn talented.
I mean, he was so believable in Raising Arizona. I cringed when I saw him on the cover. But then, I thought, it was a Coen Brothers film... And had I EVER seen a Coen Brothers film I did not like? So I watched and my jaw was near the ground. Nick was great.
Then, as though with a mission to permanently drill this realization into the depths of my critical mind, Adaptation comes along.
Now I am perplexed! Where to go from here? Does this mean, I need to seek out some more Cage action? I want to watch the man and see if he really is good or if his good acting was a fluke facilitated by the great talent of the Coens and a handfull of other such talented directors.
Then I think... Moonstruck! Moonstruck was great. I loved Moonstruck even before I disliked Cage.
For now, no decisions necessary. Cage is redeemed which means Cage movies are no longer to be ignored, for apparently I miss out when I they are...
