In the 42 months Robert and I have been dating we have attended some 23 weddings! My friends, his friends, my family, his family, my students...
In the height of the wedding period of our dating life, we were attending one every month! Some months, we attended two!
And now, I feel the frequency of weddings slowing to a trickle. Since January, we've only been to one and we have only a couple more scheduled for the remainder of this year! So now after 23 weddings in 3 and a half years, I feel I've seen and experienced enough to make two important wedding related lists: Wedding Highs & Lows! That is my favorite and least favorite parts of weddings.
And if you think I missed something, write me a comment & tell me about your wedding highs & lows!
Wedding Highs:
- When the wedding dress fits the bride like it was made for her. She looks so beautiful and confident. She looks like and angel.
- When the bride and groom proclaim their love for each other and promise to love, cherish and stand by each other in their vows. Their gaze lost in the eyes of the other, their faces only a inches apart. I can feel their heart beats loud and irregular. Holding Robert's hand as they lean in and kiss.
- When they first enter the reception hall. The romance and purity of the first dance. People standing about projecting love and support.
- Being outside where the sun can set behind the bride and groom, passed the wide open ocean; freshness of the air, sound of the waves.
- Dancing and dancing! Jumping with joy & excitement! Good music. A great band! Dancing with Robert.
- Entering the reception hall for the first time, all set up and decorated impeccably. The flowers, the chair covers, the favors on each table. We're ready for something spectacular.
- Appetizers. The guys / girls with the trays.
- Seeing familiar faces. Those I haven't seen in a while... months.. maybe years? Laughing.
- Asking the bartender for a mai tai. Oh. You don't make them? What then...? Something new? One of... your own recipes? Sure! I'll take that.
- Ice sculptures & beautiful views.
- Taking embarrassing / funny pictures of drunk partiers.
- Special performances... When the groom (Stu) sings to his now wife (Deb) with a chorus of groomsmen and bridesmaids...
Wedding Lows:
- Too many guests... too many guests that we don't know... Impersonal...
- Being cold and outside. Heals digging into the grass.
- Waiting and waiting before being let into the reception hall.
- Disappointing food
- Ceremonies that are too too long
- Paying for drinks
- Being exhausted the next day
